When people travel abroad, something strange happens to their fashion sense. Even those who are usually immaculately dressed develop a sudden desire to become totally uncoordinated. Regardless of whether people are travelling first class or are using cheap airline travel, some time between initially leaving the airport and arriving at their destination, tourists are stripped of any fashion sense that they would usually possess. Here is a look at the top seven fashion mistakes that travellers should avoid when travelling abroad.

Socks and Sandals

This fashion mistake actually appeared in pole position in a survey that was conducted to find out the worst fashion mistakes that travellers can make. Not only does it look unsightly, but it also prevents air from circulating around the feet. This has the undesirable affect of hot sweaty feet.

Vivid Colours

While summer is a great opportunity to experiments with brighter colours than one would usually wear, some people go too far and team together several different bright colours that clash and make them stand out from the crowd for all the wrong reasons. If separates are being worn, one bright colour should be teamed with a neutral colour to refine the look.

Bold Prints

Another typical fashion mistake that people make is to wear bold prints. While there is nothing wrong with wearing clothing with a pattern, it is the garish design of some items worn by travellers or the pairing of two completely different print designs that creates a fashion faux pas.

Shorts

Shorts can be a great item of clothing to wear on holidays as not only are they appropriate for the climate in many tourist destinations, they are comfortable and can be coordinated well with many other items. The fashion mistake that is made with shorts is wearing the wrong length, size or shape of shorts. It is important to choose shorts in a shape and colour that is flattering to your body shape and skin tone.

White Trainers

For some reason, the footwear of choice when travelling abroad is white trainers. While they do have some practical benefits, these are a sportswear item that do not coordinate well with most of the clothing that people wear on their holidays and it is unlikely that the holidaymaker is participating in any sporting activities. Not only are there many other colours of trainers that may be worn, many other styles of shoes would be equally practical and better matched to the clothing being worn.

Sun Cream

Although sun cream could be classified as a health and beauty product rather than a fashion item, it contributes to a person’s image and inappropriate use, or a complete lack of use, can ruin a fashion statement. Firstly, in their desperation to get a fantastic tan, many people avoid using sun cream thus creating the look of a boiled lobster. The second fashion mistake that people make in terms of using sun cream is to leave unsightly strap lines that are then not covered by clothing they later wear. Sunburn is never a good look and appeared at number five on the aforementioned survey.

Clothes That Don’t Fit

This category of fashion mistakes specifically refers to men who wear shorts and T-shirts that leave their bellies exposed in the middle. This is a mistake that can be avoided simply by wearing clothes that fit properly. Similarly, women who wear bikinis with tops that are too small are equally inappropriate and possibly create the reverse look of what they set out to achieve.
