Sephora Velvet Eyeshadow in 05 Subtle Gray
Sephora Velvet Eyeshadow range came out this summer after that almost every brand launched their mousse-like cream eyshadows. The first one was Chanel with their Illusion d’Ombre, then every brand tried to put out their version of this kind of cream eyeshadow. I own three Illusion d’Ombres and I have to say that – despite the fact they have some downsides – I wasn’t really impressed from other brands’ versions. Then I had the chance to try Sephora Velvet Eyeshadow in 05 Subtle Gray* thanks to Sephora press office. The concept is the same: a soft mousse-like texture and a cream – to – powder finish.
But Chanel Illusion d’Ombre and Sephora Velvet Eyeshadow are different in many ways.
Chanel Illusion d’Ombre has a drier texture and it’s a little hard to get the right amount of product, especially because it dries out very quickly (even if you put a lot of care in closing it properly).
Sephora Velvet Eyeshadow is way softer, you can really dip your finger in. You can pick a lot of product and getting a more intense result. Its texture is smooth and easy to work. I prefer applying it with a synthetic brush rather than my fingers because I get a more even result. Such as Chanel Illusion d’Ombre, this eyeshadow needs a base underneath because they both start creasing after 3-4 hours.
Sephora Velvet Eyeshadow is a lot sparkly since it contains a lot of micro glitters, just like Chanel Illusion d’Ombre.
Let’s talk about colour 🙂 I got Sephora Velvet Eyeshadow in 05 Subtle Gray: a greyish taupe with a cool purple undertone. It may appear similar to Chanel Illusion d’Ombre Illusoire but they’re not dupe at all. Chanel Illusoire is a lot warmer and less intense.
I think that Sephora Velvet Eyeshadows are the best alternative to Chanel Illusion d’Ombre I’ve seen so far: there is the same downside of lasting power but Sephora Velvet Eyeshadow has a better texture and costs considerably less. There is a good colour selection (12 shades are available) and price is $15 / €12.90.
